Air France Tells Pilots To Heed Safety Rules - Report

Air France managers have sent a letter to the airline's pilots calling for stricter observance of safety procedures, following a fatal crash in June, French newspaper La Tribune reported.
The paper said Air France management was responding to pressure from pilots' unions to reform security regulations following the crash of flight AF447 en route from Rio de Janeiro to Paris in June, which killed 228 people.
The paper said head of air operations Pierre-Marie Gautron and head of safety Etienne Lichtenberger wrote to all the airline's pilots, drawing attention to recent major incidents that took place because some pilots did not respect flight procedures.
The examples given included a flight taking off despite an alarm sounding during take-off, and incorrect refueling, La Tribune said.
"The simple application of procedure would have meant these events could have been avoided. We do not need to modify procedures or create new ones," they said in the letter quoted by La Tribune.
An Air France spokeswoman acknowledged the existence of the letter but declined to comment further.

Various press reports are speculating on why Northwest Airlines’ Flight 188 overshot its destination of Minneapolis by over 150 miles.

Various press reports are speculating on why Northwest Airlines’ Flight 188 overshot its destination of Minneapolis by over 150 miles. Both pilots have insisted they weren’t asleep, but have apparently said they were in a “heated discussion” that led to the overshoot.

Air traffic controllers tried to contact the pilots for almost an hour, but the aircraft (an Airbus A320) was over the neighbouring state of Wisconsin before they turned around. Because it was feared that the aircraft had been hijacked, two Air National Guard fighters were put on high alert.

The US National Transportation Safety Board is set to interview the pilots on Monday October 26, and the cockpit voice recorder and flight data recorder have been sent to the board's laboratory in Washington, DC.

Spanish airline Iberia has announced plans to restructure.

Spanish airline Iberia has announced plans to restructure “to address the dramatic [financial] situation now faced by the airline” according to a recent press release.

Called ‘Plan 2012’, the airline will create a new short-haul carrier for its domestic routes in 2011 based at Madrid Airport, while the parent company will concentrate on long-haul flights.

Iberia’s Chief Operating Officer, Rafael Sánchez-Lozano, described the current situation as unsustainable; “The airline industry has never experienced such a dramatic situation. It is essential for us to use imaginative means to transform Iberia into a sound and viable project,” he said.

Other cost-cutting measures will include a wage freeze until 2012; an early retirement plan for all cabin attendants over 55 and 200 further job cuts.

British Airways (BA) cabin crew are to hold a ballot on potential strike action.

October 27: ATWOnline reports that British Airways (BA) cabin crew are to hold a ballot on potential strike action. BA wants to implement changes to the cabin crews’ terms and conditions and lose 3,700 jobs by March 31, 2010.

The workers’ union Unite plans to ballot its 14,000 cabin crewmembers soon with any strike action planned for early November. The report says BA is "extremely disappointed" by the union's decision to ballot. "We have put together a package of changes, which despite the unprecedented financial circumstances facing the company, not only protects current cabin crew but also offers many new benefits," the airline said.

    US Revokes Northwest Pilots' Licenses

US regulators on Tuesday revoked the licenses of two Northwest Airlines pilots who overflew their destination, telling investigators they lost their bearings while discussing company policy and using their laptops.

The pilots of Northwest Flight NW188 from San Diego to Minneapolis on October 21 lost contact with air controllers for more than an hour and missed their destination by 150 miles (240 km), aviation officials said.

Both told the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) that they "lost track of time" during conversation on new crew schedules. They were also using their personal laptop computers as part of that discussion, officials said.

The schedules were put in place as a result of Northwest's merger with Delta Air Lines in 2008.

Delta has suspended the pilots, identified by Minneapolis-St. Paul airport police as Timothy Cheney and Richard Irwin, pending the outcome of the NTSB investigation and an internal company probe.

The Federal Aviation Administration revocation cited several violations and is effective immediately. The penalty can be appealed within 10 days to the NTSB, the agency said.

The Delta pilots union, the Air Line Pilots Association, urged NTSB investigators to proceed cautiously and avoid a "rush to judgment."

"We implore all interested parties to move with deliberate and unemotional professionalism as the events surrounding this incident are investigated," said Lee Moak, chairman of the Delta's pilots union.

Jet Airways Posts Wider Quarterly Loss

Jet Airways, India's No.2 carrier, is confident of demand and yields per seat rising in the next six months, after it reported a wider quarterly loss on Tuesday.

Indian airlines are reeling under mounting losses as demand waned in the wake of the financial crisis and high operating costs force them to look at fund raising options.

The company said it expected yield improvements, given the peak season as well as premium demand revival, in the next few quarters. Its focus would be on maximising revenues through higher seat factor levels, it said in a statement.

"The current capacity-demand situation is improving, capacity growth has been under check, while the demand continues to grow at a healthy pace," Executive Director Saroj Datta told reporters.

"This coupled with a stable business scenario and steady GDP growth is an ideal environment for yields to go up from current levels. Further impact of our cost initiatives will start to show full blown results in the next few quarters," he said.

Jet's September quarter net loss widened to INR4.07 billion rupees from INR3.8 billion a year ago.

Reduction in capacities through network rationalisation led to lower revenues while a 5-day strike by its pilots in September caused a revenue loss of USD$16 million, Datta said.

The firm has a net debt of USD$3.1 billion, Datta said.

Jet's overall capacity fell 17.9 percent during the quarter from a year earlier, he said.

China Airline Stocks Up After Return To Black

    October 28, 2009
Chinese airline stocks rose on Wednesday after the country's top three carriers said they returned to the black in the third quarter, thanks to fuel hedging gains and a recovery in domestic air travel.
Air China's Hong Kong traded shares rose more than 3 percent to HKD$4.45, bucking a weak market, and its Shanghai shares gained 1.7 percent.
The country's flag carrier reported a net profit of CNY885.3 million yuan (USD$81 million) last quarter, reversing a restated loss of CNY1.97 billion a year ago.
"All three airlines did pretty good in the third quarter because of the healthy recovery of the air travel market," said Zhang Qi, an analyst with Orient Securities.
Domestic air traffic in China has resumed its normal growth pattern this year, as Beijing's aggressive economic stimulus lifted consumer confidence, after a slowing economy hit demand last year.
"Even volume on the international routes has improved steadily since the beginning of the year," Zhang said.
China Southern, which posted a CNY284 million profit in the third quarter against a loss of CNY830 million a year ago, was up about 2 percent in both Hong Kong and Shanghai.
China Eastern edged up 0.9 percent in Hong Kong and was up 1.3 percent in Shanghai. It posted a slight profit of CNY23.16 million but it was a marked improvement from a CNY2.3 billion loss a year ago.
The rises bucked a broader market trend that saw Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index shed 1.11 percent, and the benchmark in Shanghai down 0.25 percent.
